In depth: Liposuction to lose weight

Surgical options are becoming popular in order to lose weight. We have previously discussed what is liposuction with the post Weight loss method: Liposuction and other kinds of surgical procedures to lose weight. In this post, we will discuss Liposuction in depth.

There are different ways to have your liposuction depending on the techniques that you will use. Liposuction procedure can vary depending on the amount of fluid injection or the mechanism of lipsuction.

Amount of fluid injection.

  1. Dry liposuction
  2. Wet liposuction
  3. Super-wet liposuction
  4. Tumescent liposuction
  5. Laser assisted liposuction

Mechanism of Lipsuction.

  1. Suction-assisted liposuction (SAL)
  2. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL)
  3. Power-assisted liposuction (PAL)
  4. Twin-cannula (assisted) liposuction (TCAL or TCL)
  5. External ultrasound-assisted liposuction (XUAL or EUAL)
  6. Water-assisted liposuction (WAL)

Suction-assisted liposuction (SAL). This technique is the standard method of liposuction. The procedure is done by inserting a small cannula to the incision. A cannula is like a small straw. The medical specialist then pushes and pulls the cannula carefully through the fat layer, breaking up the fat cells and drawing them out of the body by suction.

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL). This procedure is also called ultrasonic liposuction. Instead of manually pushing and pulling the cannula to break the fat layers, a specialized cannula is used which transmits ultrasound vibrations within the body. This vibration bursts the walls of the fat cells, emulsifying the fat and making it easier to suction out.
